Ally Principal Ray Pustinger Serves as Technical Advisor on Load Shaping Study for the California Energy Commission

Economic Study Lends Insight into the Benefits of Residential Load Shaping with Implications for Commercial and Industrial Settings

Ally Energy Solutions is pleased to announce our participation as technical advisors for a recently published smart home study commissioned by the California Energy Commission under EPC-15-048. San Diego-based Alternative Energy Systems Consulting prepared the study. The final project report, CEC-500-2020-057, “Advanced Intelligence to Enable Integration of Distributed Energy Resources,” was published in September 2020. Ally principal and CEO Ray Pustinger served on the study’s Technical Advisory Committee from 2017 through 2020.

This four-year endeavor examined the financial and grid impact of automated load shaping on 100 homes identified to have energy use patterns that contribute to grid insecurity. The homes were outfitted with smart home technology, including web-programmable thermostats, EV charging stations, and battery energy storage systems that were connected to the Residential Distributed Energy Resource Management System (RDERMS) to shift load shapes during peak demand and reduce participant utility costs. The study reviewed products, evaluated the tangible project benefits, and provided forward-looking recommendations for how the study’s outcomes could influence future energy strategy.

Ally is proud to have taken part in this important work, we are grateful to AESC and the CEC for the opportunity to contribute, and we are interested in seeing how the merits of automated load shaping may be applied to commercial and industrial applications.
